The Practice

What Is Oil Pulling?

Oil pulling is an Ayurvedic practice traced back to ancient Hindu purification rituals. It involves swishing an edible oil around the mouth to draw out toxins, reduce pathogenic bacteria, and support oral and systemic health.

These oils are readily available, cost-effective, and the results are highly beneficial for a person's systemic health. Oil pulling requires no prescription, has no medical contraindications (unless allergic to a specific oil), and offers multipurpose uses. Scientific evidence confirms its efficacy.

Oil pulling has been shown to help with many aspects of a person's health, from reducing the size of incipient dental cavities to treating fungal oral infections.

The Science

Three Mechanisms of Action

01

Saponification

When oil is swished forcefully between the teeth, it emulsifies and creates bicarbonate ions, naturally found in healthy saliva. These ions cleanse, buffer pH, replenish electrolytes, and alkalinize the mouth, aiding in the detoxification of protozoa, bacteria, and viruses.

02

Viscosity & Bacterial Inhibition

The thickness of oil inhibits bacterial growth and prevents plaque from forming. The oil's viscosity makes it difficult for pathogens to attach to teeth and gingiva, preventing bacterial, viral, and fungal accumulation.

03

Detoxification

Swishing generates antioxidants that prevent lipid peroxidation, a key step in cellular damage where free radicals steal electrons from cell membranes. This detoxifies soft tissue from toxins at the molecular level.

Choose Your Oil

Recommended Oils

Cold-pressed, food-grade oils are most effective. Non-food-grade oils may contain toxic chemicals.

Coconut Oil

Most Popular

Forms lauric acid, which is an effective alternative treatment for Streptococcus Mutans, the primary pathogen that causes dental cavities. Best at preventing and inhibiting cavity progression.

Sesame Oil

Most Potent

Shown to have the same effects as prescription Chlorhexidine Gluconate rinses. Highly effective in preventing fungal infections, including both mycelial and yeast forms of Candida albicans.

Sunflower Oil

Gingivitis Defense

Reduces and helps prevent gingival inflammation by suppressing gingivitis-causing pathogens. Works synergistically with sesame oil for gum health.

Olive Oil

Fresh Breath

Proven to reduce the most microorganisms that cause halitosis (bad breath). All listed oils help reduce the pathogenic microbial load in the mouth.

Step by Step

How to Oil Pull

1

Morning

Oil pull first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, before eating or drinking.

2

Amount

Adults: 1 tablespoon of cold-pressed, food-grade oil. Children 5–14: 1 teaspoon. Start with half a tablespoon.

3

Swish

Swish gently, pushing the oil back and forth between your teeth. Avoid aggressive swishing to prevent muscle fatigue.

4

Duration

Build up to 20 minutes. Mechanisms activate after 5 minutes. Do not exceed 20 minutes, tissues may reabsorb toxins.

5

Discard

Spit into a napkin or trash can (not the sink, oil clogs drains). The oil should be milky, white, and thinner when done.

6

Rinse

Rinse with warm salt water or follow your normal oral hygiene routine. Never swallow, the oil contains extracted toxins.

Important: Oil pulling is a complementary practice and cannot replace brushing, flossing, or professional dental care. Always spit out the oil, never swallow it, as it contains extracted toxins. Children should only oil pull under supervision, and only if they can reliably expectorate.

Enhance Your Daily Routine

A biological dentist or hygienist can help you integrate oil pulling and other natural practices into a comprehensive oral health routine.
