A comprehensive set of safety measures designed to minimize exposure to potentially harmful substances, particularly mercury, during dental procedures.
Find a PROTECT Protocol DentistThe International Academy of Biological Dentistry and Medicine (IABDM) has developed the safest mercury amalgam filling removal protocol which protects the patients, practitioners and the planet.
The “PROTECT Protocol” is an evolving protocol that adheres to OSHA guidelines and is above the standard of care in most states for amalgam removal. As new information is available, or laws change, the IABDM will update the PROTECT Protocol.
The IABDM is not a governing agency, thus the responsibility falls on the practitioner to properly follow the protocol. We ask our PROTECT Protocol Providers to pledge to adhere to the protocol as stringently as possible. The IABDM provides a PROTECT Protocol checklist for patients to use as a guide for the various safety measures.
If a patient requests a PROTECT Protocol Provider to deviate from the protocol, we recommend the dentist have a conversation with the patient explaining the potential ramifications of deviating from the protocol and then thoroughly documenting the need to alter treatment.
The IABDM advises against pregnant or breastfeeding women undergoing amalgam removal.
The protocol outlines the mandatory installation of sizeable filtration systems in dental rooms. These systems, like air filtration or oral aerosol vacuums, capture harmful mercury vapor and amalgam particles during removal procedures.
Full body barriers are worn by patients to protect their clothes from mercury exposure. They are also provided with eye protection.
Mouths are thoroughly flushed with an adsorbent like charcoal before the procedure.
The amalgam is sectioned into pieces and removed, reducing exposure levels.
Workers utilize personal protective equipment (PPE), such as respirators and full-body gowns during the process of removal. After finishing the procedure, all used PPE is correctly disposed of, as it is contaminated with mercury.
Technology like high-volume suction equipment helps continue to capture any remaining mercury particulate after the completion of the procedure.
The PROTECT Protocol reflects a broader philosophy within biological dentistry: dental care should support the body's health while minimizing unnecessary exposure to potentially harmful substances.
By prioritizing safety measures, careful technique, and environmental controls, biological dentists work to reduce risks and support patient well-being during restorative procedures.
