Why It Matters

Removing Amalgam Safely Is A Process

The International Academy of Biological Dentistry and Medicine (IABDM) has developed the safest mercury amalgam filling removal protocol which protects the patients, practitioners and the planet.

Taking amalgam out without the right precautions can raise exposure rather than lower it. Use the checklist below as your guide, and ask your dentist to confirm each measure before treatment begins.

The Checklist

Six measures. Every one of them should be in place for your appointment.

01

Air Filtration and Ventilation

The protocol outlines the mandatory installation of sizeable filtration systems in dental rooms. These systems, like air filtration or oral aerosol vacuums, capture harmful mercury vapor and amalgam particles during removal procedures.

02

Patient Barriers and Eye Protection

Full body barriers are worn by patients to protect their clothes from mercury exposure. They are also provided with eye protection.

03

Adsorbent Mouth Rinse

Mouths are thoroughly flushed with an adsorbent like charcoal before the procedure.

04

Chunking Technique

The amalgam is sectioned into pieces and removed, reducing exposure levels.

05

Personal Protective Equipment

Workers utilize personal protective equipment (PPE), such as respirators and full-body gowns during the process of removal. After finishing the procedure, all used PPE is correctly disposed of, as it is contaminated with mercury.

06

High-Volume Suction and Cleanup

Technology like high-volume suction equipment helps continue to capture any remaining mercury particulate after the completion of the procedure.

The IABDM advises against pregnant or breastfeeding women undergoing amalgam removal.

Questions to Ask Before Your Appointment

Do you follow the IABDM PROTECT Protocol for amalgam removal?

What air filtration and high-volume suction will be running during my procedure?

Will I be given barriers, eye protection, and an adsorbent rinse?

How is the amalgam sectioned and removed, and how is the room cleaned afterwards?
