Biological Dentistry

At the International Academy of Biological Dentistry and Medicine (IABDM), we stress the importance of sustainability in dental practice. Among our main concerns is reducing waste and preventing pollution.

Biological dentistry is much more than treating oral health issues. It calls for a holistic approach, emphasizing the impact of dental health on the overall well-being of the patient. Equally, the way dental operations affect the environment is a vital aspect. If our practices generate a significant amount of waste and pollution, it’s time to reassess and plan necessary improvements.

Adopting digital imaging can significantly reduce waste. Traditional x-rays, used by 66-75% of US dental offices, result in the disposal of 4.8 million lead foils and 28 million liters of toxic fixer annually. On the other hand, the shift to digital imaging eliminates the need for these hazardous materials. While we often focus on efficient waste disposal, we must remember that the most effective method to prevent pollution is to try not to generate waste from the outset.

Another area of concern in biological dentistry is the disposal of mercury waste. It’s a common misconception among dentists who no longer use amalgam that they don’t require an amalgam separator. However, all dental offices, regardless of whether they use amalgam or not, generate mercury waste that must be cautiously managed to prevent polluting local wastewater treatment plants, incineration facilities, and the air.

Lastly, dental offices must reconsider their use of single-use, disposable patient barriers and sterilization methods. While these may appear cost-effective and safe in the short-term, they contribute significantly to landfill accumulation. Reusable cloth methods and recyclable materials can effectively reduce waste, as evidenced in many high-standard hospital operatory rooms.

Practicing biological dentistry isn’t solely about treating the patient’s oral condition. It’s also about acknowledging our responsibility towards the environment. By minimizing waste and adopting planet-friendly practices, we can model green dentistry that is sustainable, responsible, and ethical. At IABDM, we endeavor to provide a robust framework for such a change, ensuring a healthy future for our patients and our planet.
