Frances Horning, BRDH has been practicing dental hygiene for over 37 years with a holistic mindset and has been at the forefront of biological and natural dental modalities since 1984, when the biological dentistry movement was first forming.

Her decades of dedication and study have earned her leadership roles within the International Academy of Biological Dentistry & Medicine, where she serves as Associate Director, Hygiene Department Chair, and Board Member. Fran lectures nationally and internationally, educating doctors and dental teams on the practical, clinical application of biological dentistry.

Course Description:

Dentistry is uniquely positioned at the intersection of systemic inflammation, neurologic signaling, airway function, and metabolic health. As interest grows in “biohacking” and health optimization, dental professionals are increasingly asked to understand how oral conditions may influence whole-body physiology and how lifestyle factors may impact oral health outcomes.

This course introduces biohacking concepts through an evidence-informed dental lens, focusing on cellular energy, inflammation, nitric oxide physiology, circadian biology, stress response, and airway-related factors as they relate to oral and periodontal health. Participants will explore how common dental findings—such as periodontal inflammation, occlusal stress, mouth breathing, and sleep-related disorders—may reflect broader physiologic patterns observed in clinical practice.

Emphasis is placed on clinical awareness, patient education, and interdisciplinary collaboration rather than diagnosis or treatment beyond the dental scope of practice. Attendees will gain practical insight into how dentists and dental hygienists can ethically integrate biohacking-related concepts into preventive care, communication, and referral pathways to support comprehensive oral–systemic health.

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Define “biohacking” within an evidence-informed healthcare framework and distinguish clinically relevant concepts from non-medical or non-evidence-based claims.
  2. Describe the role of inflammation, oxidative stress, and cellular energy metabolism in the development and progression of oral and periodontal disease.
  3. Explain how nitric oxide physiology, airway function, and sleep quality influence oral health, periodontal stability, and systemic wellness.
  4. Identify lifestyle-related factors—including circadian rhythm disruption, nutrition, stress physiology, and breathing patterns—that may impact oral-systemic health.
  5. Recognize common dental and periodontal findings that may correlate with broader physiologic stress or systemic imbalance, supporting comprehensive patient assessment.
  6. Discuss the ethical role of dentists and dental hygienists in patient education, preventive guidance, and interdisciplinary referral related to biohacking-informed concepts.
  7. Apply biohacking principles within the dental scope of practice to enhance patient communication, preventive strategies, and team-based care planning
