The Identification of Periodontal Pathogens via Chairside Microscopy

by | Jan 1, 2025 | Study Club/Webinars

Presentation by: Bill Landers-Oratec

Periodontal disease is caused by specific bacteria. Key members of the periodontopathic microflora and the conditions favoring their growth are easily identified via chairside phase contrast microscopy. The presence or absence of pathogens also provides confirmation of treatment success and patient compliance with home care. This course will teach attendees how to:

1. Obtain suitable subgingival biofilms for analysis.

2. Prepare biofilms for optimum microscopic assessment.

3. Identify key periodontal pathogens.

4. Identify the non-pathogenic characteristics of healthy biofilms.

Bill Landers is the President of OraTec, known for antimicrobial agents, delivery systems and microbiological tests for periodontal infections. He pioneered the development of phase contrast microscopy for dentistry and co-developed the antimicrobial agent TheraSol and the Viajet oral irrigator. He’s widely known for his in-depth knowledge regarding BioScan phase contrast microscopy, BANA enzymatic assays, DNA testing, and cultures.

His lectures topics range from the microbiology and testing of periodontal diseases to immunology, systemic antibiotics and anti-infective paradigms.

Mr. Landers’ knack for making complex science easy to understand and uncommon mastery of PowerPoint has made him a popular lecturer with audiences. He’s given hundreds of lectures at venues ranging from dental and dental hygiene schools, universities and government agencies to dental and dental hygiene societies. He’s also been a featured columnist for the journal RDH. His articles have also been published in Contemporary Dental Hygiene and Modern Hygienist.

While Mr. Landers is the President of a dental company, his presentations are known for being scrupulously non-commercial. Science matters.
